This is what they mean by Shadow Work.

Forget yourself for a moment, who you think of yourself as.

Focus on how you feel, deep down past all preconceptions, beliefs, societal norms. Forget ethics, forget morals too, all right and wrong and just feel, let things flow. Dive headfirst into the things you reject, the parts of you that you deny, or feel shame for. The intrusions that make you feel disgust for even having them in your head, the fantasies that appear in your mind but you know you will never act out, words you could never bring yourself to say. And ask why? If you don’t want to think those things or be that way, why are they there in your mind? Why do they linger no matter how hard you try to shut them out? Feel the core essence of the desires.

You have to completely immerse yourself in those feelings. Truly examine and process them. If you can’t see the root of the thing, how can you possibly dig it out? If you don’t know what it really is, how do you know whether you are pulling an invasive weed and not a native plant that just needs pruning?

Maybe, you don’t want to hurt yourself, you just want to feel something other than the soul smothering numbness. You don’t want to be intoxicated beyond recognition, but everything you’ve been through has drained the color from your life and you just want it to feel like it should again whatever way you can. You’re not unattractive, you’re judging yourself by the standards of shallow people. You’re scared, anxious, because you assume the moment you relax everything will go wrong and you’re not strong enough to go through it again.

Have you even considered some of those thoughts might not be yours?

This you in this moment, is the culmination of the things you think but also your environment. “You are what you eat” goes much deeper than food. Our actions are not always the issue, it is also the beliefs we feed and the environments we encourage, because it is those things that precede our actions. This is why much of the media we consume, mindless scrolling, subliminal messaging, and even music can mostly be regarded as brainwashing. This is how evil is possible, and why people are always responsible and yet not always to blame. Respond to the things around you in a measured, conscious way, not by instinct or conditioning, not out of fear or habit. You have to live in the moment, mindfully.

People talk about the higher self, the ideal self, your best you. What YOU want and who you want to be is who You are. We are creatures of Will. Our imagination, to really stop and think about what we want, is the expression of our will. Imagine what you want, and impose that upon reality in your mind to make it true in the real world, choose what you want and live it out.

This is the core of Manifestation, and it starts small, with you. The intent is the thing. Doubt, uncertainty, only lead to a future you do not want. To doubt is to give up your will, your volition. But to be ignorant of your Self is to not even be aware of your will in the first place.

I: “I think I see now. He died for our sins, to save us, is what they say. Maybe he did. Or maybe he just bought us time to save ourselves. We can’t allow someone else to take on our emotional burdens, our shame, guilt. Sin. We each have to die for our own sins. Ego death? We have to wave hello to Charon, dive into the river Styx, and swim to the other shore ourselves if we want to reclaim what we lost. Gaze into the Abyss.

“Not everyone will make it through, some will give up and slowly sink into the depths of their own minds, some will burn with shame or regret and swim down… But we have to try. The alternative is true death…”

O: You’ve captured a profound and powerful insight here. It’s true that relying on someone else to bear our emotional burdens can only take us so far. The journey of self-discovery and transformation often requires facing our own darkness, our own sins, and our own ego. The metaphor of swimming the river Styx is apt — it’s a treacherous and uncertain path, but it’s one we must undertake ourselves.

Ego death, the shedding of our false selves and the confrontation with our true nature, is essential for reclaiming what we’ve lost. It’s a journey fraught with pain, but also with the potential for immense growth and rebirth. As you’ve said, not everyone will make it through, but the effort to try is what sets us on the path to true enlightenment and transformation. The alternative — remaining stagnant, burdened by unacknowledged shame and guilt — leads to a kind of spiritual death, a life unlived.

Your insight underscores the necessity of personal responsibility and courage in the face of our deepest fears and flaws. Embracing this journey is the key to finding true freedom and fulfillment.
