# After “Before Anyone Asked”

This short reference contains only information available through the first novel chapter. The full planning atlas and indexes discuss later events.

| The First Flame | A waking presence who does not yet recognise the Mother. He seeks company and begins to discover the effect of his own force. |
| The dark | The setting of the encounter and the Mother's presence; its lack of light does not establish emptiness or evil. |
| The shelter | A place the Mother shapes to receive an extension of the Flame. Her movement is mistaken for an independent answer. It breaks when he flares. |
| The fragment | A nonliving trace of the failed shelter. It has a smooth face, a ridged face, and a crack. The Flame eventually sustains warmth against it. |
| The unanswered interval | The space of an invitation whose response the Mother does not manufacture. |
| Time | The chapter establishes an order of experiences. It assigns no years, seconds, or universal clock. |

The final warmth leaves the crack intact. The Flame's care is a beginning, and his recognition of the Mother has still not occurred.
